Biography

Selma Erickson was born on May 20, 1861 in Alingsås, Sweden. She was the third of seven children and the first daughter. At some point, her parents had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and, in 1862, they left with her and her one living older brother to gather with the other Saints in Utah. The sailed on the ship "Electric" from Hamburg to New York. They left on April 18, 1862 and arrived on June 5th. Selma turned one on the voyage.
After arriving in the States, she and her family traveled with the Joseph Horne wagon company to the Salt Lake Valley. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on October 1, 1862. They settled in Grantsville, Tooele.
In 1876, at the age of fifteen, Selma married Andrew Gustave Nygreen Johnson, another Swedish immigrant. They settled in Grantsville and had ten children together, six daughters and four sons. Three of her sons died as children. In 1908, four years after her last son was born, Selma passed away on May 27. She was barely forty-seven years old. She was buried in Grantsville.
