Biography

Augusta Eliason was born on May 5, 1854 in Alingsås, Sweden. She was the sixth of seven children. She grew up in a nice home by a lake and forests. In 1863, Augusta immigrated with her family to Utah. They sailed on the B. S. Kimball from Liverpool to New York. They traveled from Nebraska to Salt Lake City with the John R. Young wagon company, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on September 12, 1863. In 1875, when Augusta was 20, she married Ormus Eaton Bates, a native of New York. They had eight children together, three sons and five daughters. They settled in Grantsville, where Augusta's first five children were born. Sometime around 1885, the family relocated to Hyrum, Utah, in Cache Valley. Augusta had three more children there.
Augusta was known to have a noble character and lovable disposition and was well-respected in her community. At some point, she relocated once again to Shelley in Bingham, Idaho. She died there on August 22, 1926, at the age of 72. She was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Shelley.
