Biography

Ingeborg Kirstine Jespersdatter was born on January 10, 1802 in Vestermarie, Bornholm, Denmark. She was the youngest of eight children. In 1834, Ingeborg married Mauritz Hansen, who had been widowed earlier in the year with a few children. Ingeborg had two children with Mauritz, Karen, born in 1835, and Niels, born in 1846.
In 1849, Mauritz died at sea, leaving Ingeborg a widow. In April a few months later, Ingeborg remarried to Hans Andersen Pihl. On May 9, 1852, Ingeborg and her husband were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. By November of the same year they were planning to immigrate to Utah. Ingeborg and her family left for Germany in December of 1852 with the John Forsgren company. From Germany, they traveled to Liverpool, where they boarded the Forest Monarch, which arrived in New Orleans two months later, on March 16, 1853.
Once in America, they traveled to Iowa to start their journey across the plains. Hans, Ingeborg's husband, died early on in the journey near the Platte River, leaving her a widow once again and responsible for her children. They continued the journey, arriving in Salt Lake City on September 29, 1853.
After arriving in Utah, Stewart Allen, a wealthy man, took Ingeborg and her family in. In 1857, Ingeborg and her daughter Karen both married Stewart, who already had two other wives. In 1860, Ingeborg was recorded to be working as a washerwoman on the census. In 1865, Ingeborg and her family moved to "the Muddy" near Overton, Nevada. Ingeborg died there a few years later, on June 3, 1869. It is possible she died of malaria. She was 67 years old. Ingeborg was buried in the Pioneer Hill Cemetery in Overton, Clark, Nevada.
