Selina Larsen

Biography

Selina Larsen was born on September 12, 1854 in Brovst, Øster Han, Hjørring, Denmark. She was the youngest of four children. Her family had a farm on which they grew grain and herded geese and cattle. On August 2, 1862, her family was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Selina was too young to be baptized with them, but she was baptized later. The family would walk four miles to attend the nearest church.
Four years later, in 1866, Selina and her family left Denmark for Utah. They sailed on the ship Kenilworth from Hamburg to New York, arriving on July 16, 1866. Then, they joined the Abner Lowry wagon company in Nebraska. Selina's parents both caught cholera soon after they joined the company and died, leaving their children to finish the journey alone. Selina was not quite twelve years old and already an orphan. She got sick for a part of the journey and had to ride in the wagon, but she and all her siblings made it safely to Utah.
Once they arrived in Salt Lake City, different families took in Selina and her siblings. It seems that Selina settled somewhere in Salt Lake City. In 1875, at the age of twenty-one, she married Raphael Secelian Guiliani, an Italian immigrant. It does not seem like they had any children together. They lived in Salt Lake City. Raphael passed away in 1905, leaving Selina a widow. On the evening of September 30, 1933, she was hit by an automobile and killed while crossing the street to get her mail. She was buried beside her husband in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was seventy-nine years old.
