Biography
Maja Elisabeth (Maria Lisa) Gustafsdotter was born on June 17, 1919 in Kärda, Jönköping, Sweden. She had at least six older siblings. She married Peter Andersson Nyberg on December 1, 1844, at the age of twenty-five. They lived in Kärda and had two sons and a daughter together. At some point, the family relocated to Ålborg, Denmark. Maja and Peter joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at some point before 1874, and in 1874, they immigrated to Utah to join other Saints there. None of their children joined them on the journey. Maja was fifty-five when they left. Maja Elisabeth and Peter sailed on the ship Wyoming from Liverpool to New York from September 2-14, 1874. They made their way from New York to Utah by rail and settled in Tooele, Utah.
After Peter passed away in 1877, Maja Elisabeth remarried three times. She first married Axel Peterson, an immigrant from Norway, and when he passed away, she married Edward Stagg, an Englishman. It is possible she relocated to Pleasant Grove to live with him. However, when he died in 1890, she remarried once again, this time to Sven Jonasson, another Swedish immigrant and resident of Tooele. He also died before Maja, on October 12, 1899, but he was her last husband. Maja Elisabeth stayed in Tooele until she died two years later, on October 18, 1901. She was eighty-two years old.
