Biography

Maja Kajsa Olson was born on October 10, 1826 in Åmål, Åmål, Älvsborg, Sweden. She was the eldest of seven children. Around September 1, 1854, Maja married Johannes Olsson in Järn, Älvsborg, Sweden. They settled in Jern, Sweden, and had six children, two daughters and four sons, together. Two of Maja's sons died in infancy.
At some point before 1877, Maja and her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As there was no money for the whole family to immigrate to Utah, Maja's two daughters, Anna and Matilda, went ahead to work and send money back to the family. In 1878, when Anna was about to get married, they were able to send for the rest of the family. Maja, her husband, and her two sons left Sweden on August 29, 1878, crossing the Atlantic on the Wyoming from September 14-25. Then they took a train to Grantsville, Utah, where Maja's daughters had settled. The whole family was glad to be reunited.
Maja and Johannes settled in Grantsville near their children. Maja lived there for the rest of her life, passing away on May 18, 1890, at the age of sixty-three. She was buried in the Grantsville City Cemetery.
