Biography

Christina Victoria Otterbeck was born on February 17, 1858 in Porsgrunn, Norway. She was the third of five children born to Ane Kristine Jacobsen and Anders Ludvig Otterbeck. Christina’s father died at sea in 1864. After joining the church, Christina’s mother began to work at the Scandinavian mission office. At the mission office, Christina’s mother met missionary Anthon Skanchy, whom she married in the spring of 1868. From thence forward, Christina Otterbeck was known as Christina Skanchy.

Soon after her mother’s remarriage, Christina and the rest of her family immigrated to the United States. They left from Liverpool aboard the John Bright and arrived in New York City on July 14, 1868. The family joined the Horton D. Haight Company in Laramie, Wyoming and traveled on to Utah. Upon arrival in Utah, the Skanchys settled in Logan.

Christina married Thomas Griffin Winn as his third wife on May 1, 1874 when she was only fourteen years old. Together, Thomas and Christina were the parents of twelve children, remarkably all of whom survived to adulthood. When Thomas died in 1903, Christina was left a widow with at least six children to raise alone. Christina died on December 30, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah and was buried in the Smithfield Cemetery.
